This publication is an attempt to collect the different stages of the experiments and the encounters that happened at the collective residency Cqrrelations in January 2015, in a way that stays consistent with the techniques and the approaches involved in the event itself. For this reason the publication is mainly consisting of the autoindex function of the Apache webserver, which by default lists all the files inside a web folder.

This website collects all kinds of traces and materials produced before, during and after the Cqrrelations worksession, organized by Constant in 2015 in Bruxelles. Cqrrelations invited data travellers, writers, numbergeeks, programmers, artists, mathematicians, storytellers, and other tech creative souls to explore the world of digital non-relations, desanalysis, blurry categorisations and crummylations in the Big Data that shapes our daily reality and language.

This notebook is an aggregation of different types of content from the server(s) running during the worksession: the content of the file server where files were shared in-between participants, re-ordered by project; the “dump” of the Etherpad installation used to take notes during the worksession; the sound recordings of different presentations that happened during the two weeks; and the video recording of ‘Big Data & Discrimination’, the public event organised in collaboration with Vlaams Nederlands Huis deBuren, CPDP and Recyclart.

Cette publication vise à montrer les différentes phases d’expérimentations et de rencontres qui ont eu lieu lors de la résidence collective Cqrrelations en janvier 2015, et ceci, dans la mesure du possible, en accord avec les technologies et méthodes qui ont été utilisées lors de l’événement. Voilà pourquoi la publication consiste en grande partie de la fonction d’auto-indexation du serveur web Apache, qui organise tous les documents par défaut dans un dossier.

Ce site web est une collection de traces et matériaux qui ont été produits avant, pendant et après Cqrrelations, la session de travail organisé par Constant en 2015 à deBuren à Bruxelles. Lors de cette résidence Constant a invité des explorateurs de données, des écrivains, des amateurs de chiffres, des programmeurs, des artistes, des mathématiciens, des conteurs et d’autres âmes techno-créatives à venir découvrir le monde des non-relations digitales, des désanalyses, des catégorisations floues et d’autre crummylations présentes dans les Big Data qui donnent de plus en plus de forme à nos réalités et languages quotidiens.

Ce cahier de notes donne un aperçu des différents types de contenus localisés sur le(s) serveur(s) pendant la session de travail: le dossier utilisé par les participants pour partager leurs documents, organisé par projet; le “dump” de l’installation Etherpad qui a été utilisée pour prendre des notes lors de la session de travail; des enregistrements sonores des multiples présentations; et des enregistrements vidéo de ‘Big Data & Discrimination’, l’événement public organisé en collaboration avec Vlaams Nederlands Huis deBuren, CPDP et Recyclart.

Deze publicatie toont de verschillende stadia van experimenten en ontmoetingen die plaatsvonden tijdens de collectieve residentie Cqrrelaties in januari 2015. Ze gebruikt zoveel mogelijk de technieken en methodes die gebruikt zijn tijdens het evenement. Daarom bestaat de publicatie vooral uit de autoindex-functie van de Apache webserver, die alle documenten standaard in een webfolder rangschikt.

Deze website is een verzameling van sporen en materiaal dat aangemaakt werd voor, tijdens en na Cqrrelaties, een werksessie die Constant in 2015 organiseerde in deBuren in Brussel. Cqrrelaties nodigde datareizigers uit, schrijvers, cijfergeeks, programmeurs, kunstenaars, wiskundigen, verhalenvertellers en andere techcreatieve duizendpoten voor een ontdekkingsreis langs de non-relaties, desanalyses, vage categoriseringen en crymmylaties in de Big Data die onze dagdagelijkse omgeving en taal mee vormgeven.

Dit notitieboek geeft een overzicht van de verschillende soorten inhoud die zich op de server(s) bevond tijdens de werksessie: de folder waarin deelnemers documenten deelden, georganiseerd per project; de “dump” van de Etherpad installatie die werd gebruikt om aantekeningen te maken tijdens de werksessie; geluidsopnames van de verschillende presentaties die plaatsvonden tijdens die week; en de video-opnames van ‘Big Data & Discrimination’, het publieke evenment georganiseerd in samenwerking met Vlaams Nederlands Huis deBuren, CPDP et Recyclart.

DiVersions took place in the Royal Museum of Art and History in Brussels from 4 to 11 December 2016 and was inspired by the way versions are inscribed in daily software-practice. With 35 participants we explored how parallel to their conventional narrative of collaboration and consensus, we could produce divergent histories through supporting difference.

The worksession was followed by a broader project which consisted in an exhibition in De Pianofabriek and this publication in 2019. A second version of this publication and an online exhibition were launched in June 2020.

Diversies vond plaats van 4 tot 11 december 2016 in het Koninklijk Museum voor Kunst en Geschiedenis in Brussel en vertrok vanuit de manier waarop versies deel uitmaken van de dagelijkse software-praktijk. Met 35 deelnemers onderzochten we hoe we naast het gebruikelijke verhaal over samenwerking en consensus, ook divergerende vormen van geschiedschrijving mogelijk kunnen maken door plaats te bieden aan verschil.

De werksessie werd gevolgd door een breder project dat bestond uit een tentoonstelling in De Pianofabriek en deze publicatie in 2019. Een tweede versie van deze publicatie en een online tentoonstelling werden gelanceerd in juni 2020.

This first episode in the series Networks Of One’s Own includes a software release, manuals, documentation and essays of Etherbox, a constellation of practices and tools developed in and around Constant. Etherbox responds to practical issues when collaborating in physical spaces with digital tools. In parallel, it became a platform to reflect on network technologies, on how to document artistic processes and on processes of collaboration.

On a practical level, Etherbox was a response to several frustrations: the fragility of online resources, the fact that the labour necessary to maintain resources online after a collective session was often overlooked or simply assumed to continue indefinitely, the limitations of Internet bandwidth when working with many people using etherpad-lite. The goal of the project was thus to present an infrastructure that is both visible and situated. Since it’s early beginnings in 2013, many groups have enjoyed the pleasure of writing and documenting together, questioning infrastructure set-ups or simply sharing files effortlessly. Through these multiple experiences, Etherbox has grown up to facilitate discussions and collaborative practices independent from Constant collaborators. Now it is ready to transmutate into other networked imaginations.

Networks Of One’s Own is a para-nodal1 periodic publication that is itself collectively written in a network. Each of the episodes is thought of as the ‘release’ of a specific software stack, contextualised in its specific practice. The series aims to document a set of tools, experiences, ways of working that are diverse in terms of their temporality, granularity and persistence.

Ce premier épisode de la série Networks Of One’s Own comprend une version du logiciel, des manuels, de la documentation et des essais et d’Etherbox, une constellation de pratiques et d’outils développés au travers et autour de Constant. Etherbox répond à des problématiques pratiques dans le cadre d’une collaboration dans les espaces physiques avec des outils numériques. D’un point de vue pratique, Etherbox offre une réponse à plusieurs frustrations : la fragilité des ressources en ligne, le fait que le travail nécessaire pour maintenir les ressources en ligne après une session collective était souvent négligé ou simplement supposé se poursuivre à l’infini, les limites de la bande passante Internet lorsque l’on travaille avec plusieurs personnes utilisant etherpad-lite. L’objectif du projet était donc de présenter une infrastructure à la fois visible, adaptable et située. Depuis ses débuts en 2013, de nombreux groupes ont eu le plaisir d’écrire et de documenter ensemble, de remettre en question les configurations d’infrastructure ou simplement de partager des fichiers sans effort. Grâce à ces multiples expériences, Etherbox s’est développé comme outil pour faciliter les discussions et les pratiques collaboratives de manière indépendante des collaborateurs de Constant. Il est maintenant prêt à se transmuter en d’autres imaginations en réseau.

Networks Of One’s Own est une publication périodique para-nodale, écrite collectivement en réseau. Chaque épisode est considéré comme la « publication » d’un module de logiciel, contextualisée dans sa pratique spécifique. Deze eerste aflevering in de serie Networks Of One’s Own bevat een software release, handleidingen, documentatie en essays van Etherbox. Etherbox is een gereedschap ontwikkeld in en rond Constant. Het biedt een antwoord op praktische vragen voor documentatie en het delen van bestanden, wanneer een groep mensen samenwerkt in een ruimte met digitaal materiaal. Daarnaast werd het ook een platform om na te denken over genetwerkte technologieën, het documenteren van artistieke processen en processen van samenwerken.

Heel concreet biedt Etherbox antwoord op een aantal frustraties: de kwetsbaarheid van online bronmateriaal, de gespeletenheid om digitaal materiaal te delen via servers in de VS, terwijl je elkaar koffie schenkt in dezelfde ruimte; het feit dat werkuren die nodig zijn om documentatie van collectieve sessies online te onderhouden vaak over het hoofd worden gezien, of dat er eenvoudigweg vanuit gegaan wordt dat archivering tot in het oneindige gebeurt, de beperkingen van een Internetverbinding wanneer je met veel mensen tegelijk op etherpad-lite werkt. Het doel van dit project was dus het ontwikkelen van een infrastructuur die tegelijk zichtbaar, manipuleerbaar en gesitueerd is. Sinds de eerste versies in 2013 vond een heel aantal groepen plezier in het samen schrijven en documenteren, het zoeken naar verschillende infrastructurele set-ups, of eenvoudigweg het delen van bestanden. Dankzij deze meervoudige ervaringen groeide Etherbox tot een gereedschap dat discussies en collectieve praktijken faciliteert, onafhankelijk van Constantleden. Nu is het klaar om te transformeren in andere genetwerkte verbeeldingen.

Networks Of One’s Own is een periodieke paranodale publicatie die collectief geschreven wordt in een netwerk. Elke episode wordt gezien als de ’release’ van een softwarestack, die gecontextualiseerd wordt in zijn specifieke praktijk. De serie is gericht op het documenteren van een set van instrumenten, ervaringen, manieren van werken die divers zijn in termen van hun temporaliteit, granulariteit en persistentie.

From October 2015 until December 2016 a worksession, an exhibition and lots more ran under the header of Objects in Common. In computation, a ’pipe’ is a method that enables various software modules to connect to each other, where the output of one program is treated as the input for the next program. This publication follows the Promiscuous Pipelines worksession that Constant organised with FoAM in 2015, in which we used the principle of ’pipes’ to inspire uncommon junctions and perhaps achieve the opposite of a productivity-oriented systems.

The publication of reflections, experiments and other outcomes of this session was of course done in the same spirit. This publication is a hybrid between a formatted, laid-out publication and a folder of ’stuff’, an untidy experiment linking up bespoke software, live notes, raw materials and collaborative editing.

Dans le monde du logiciel libre, le terme “pipe” est utilisé pour indiquer un procédé dans lequel plusieures modules sont connectés les uns aux autres. Les résultats d’un logiciel sont traités comme l’entrée du programme suivant. Lors de la séance de travail Promiscuous Pipelines que Constant a organisée l’été dernier avec FoAM, nous avons utilisé le principe de “pipe” pour établir des connections inhabituelles et peut-être atteindre le contraire d’un système axée sur la productivité. Bien sûr, nous avons abordé de façon similaire les réflexions, expériences et résultats issus de la séance de travail. La publication est l’hybride entre une publication mise en page et un dossier de fichiers. Une expérience en désordre, ou une rencontre entre des logiciels sur mesure, des prises de notes, du contenu brut et la rédaction collective.

In software wordt de term ’pipe’ gebruikt om een methode aan te duiden waarbij verschillende modules met elkaar worden verbonden. De uitvoer van één programma wordt behandeld als de input van het volgende programma. Tijdens de werksessie Promiscuous Pipelines die Constant de afgelopen zomer samen met FoAM organiseerde, gebruikten we het principe van ’pipes’ om ongewone verbindingen te maken en misschien wel het tegenovergestelde te bereiken van een op productiviteit georiënteerd systeem. Uiteraard benaderden we de reflecties, experimenten en resultaten van deze werksessie vanuit dezelfde methode. De publicatie is een hybride tussen een opgemaakte, gedrukte publicatie en een map met ’files’. Een onopgeruimd experiment waarbij op maat gemaakte software, live-notities, ruwe inhoud en collectieve redactie samenkomen.
