The 14th edition of Verbindingen/Jonctions was dedicated to a feminist review of mesh- cloud- autonomous- and D.I.Y. servers during four intense meetingdays mixing lectures, screenings, performances, discussions and workshops.

By Data We Mean is an online publication following the meetingdays Verbindingen/Jonctions 12. A creation by Donatella Portoghese, Nicolas Malevé, Stephanie Villayphiou, Alex Leray and Gijs de Heij.This publication collects the different texts that were produced for the lectures and presentation of V/J12. It also constitutes a platform for experiments. What becomes possible when texts are released under a free license? What happens when two texts apparently very different from each other, but with many points of contact at a second reading, are brought together, mixed, smashed, and suddenly acquire a completely different form and meaning? Isn’t every text ambiguous and open to different interpretations? And how can the grey literature surrounding textual production influence the process of reading and decoding it?

By Data We Mean est une publication en ligne suite à l’édition de Verbindingen/Jonctions 12. Réalisée par Donatella Portoghese, Nicolas Malevé, Stephanie Villayphiou, Alex Leray et Gijs de Heij.Cette publication rassemble les différents textes qui ont été produits pour les conférences et les présentations de V/J12. Elle est aussi une plateforme pour de nouvelles expériences. Quelles possibilités adviennent lorsque des textes sont publiés sous une licence libre ? Que se passe-t-il lorsque deux textes apparemment très différents l’un de l’autre, mais qui révèlent de nombreux points de contact à une deuxième lecture, sont soudain mis en relation, mixés, pétris l’un dans l’autre et acquièrent une nouvelle forme et un sens nouveau ? Chaque texte n’est-il pas ambigu et ouvert à une réinterprétation ? Et comment la littérature grise qui encadre la production textuelle influence sa lecture et son décodage ?

Het is ook een experiment met het potentieel van teksten die onder een vrije licentie worden gepubliceerd. Wat gebeurt er wanneer twee teksten, die op het eerste gezicht erg verschillend zijn, maar tijdens een tweede lezing een reeks gemeenschappelijke elementen vertonen, worden samengebracht en gemixed, en een heel verschillende vorm en betekenis krijgen? Is niet elke tekst ambiguë en open voor interpretatie? En hoe kan de grijze literatuur die tekstproductie omringt, het leesproces beïnvloeden en decoderen?

Verbindingen/Jonctions 9 took place from 24 until 28 November 2005 between Brussels, Liège and Antwerp.

We wanted to contribute to a critical reading of the underlying structures and applications of two fundamental elements of digital media: language and memory. Instead of unchangeable entities, we consideblack them as instruments for sharing contents and free exchange of information. We were curious about language and code as means to express multiplicity and wanted to find out how dialects, pidgin and slang could act as cultural bridges.

Verbindingen/Jonctions 9 s'est déroulé du 24 au 28 novembre 2005 entre Bruxelles, Liège et Anvers.

Nous voulions contribuer à une lecture critique des structures et des applications sous-jacentes de deux éléments fondamentaux des médias numériques: le langage et la mémoire. Au lieu d'entités immuables, nous les considérons comme des instruments de partage de contenu et de libre échange d'informations. Nous étions curieux de voir la langue et le code comme des moyens d'exprimer la multiplicité et nous voulions découvrir comment les dialectes, le pidgin et l'argot pouvaient servir de ponts culturels.

Verbindingen/Jonctions 9 vond plaats van 24 tot 28 november 2005 tussen Brussel, Luik en Antwerpen.

We wilden bijdragen aan een kritische lezing van de onderliggende structuren en toepassingen van twee fundamentele elementen van digitale media: taal en geheugen. In plaats van onveranderlijke entiteiten beschouwen we ze zwart als instrumenten voor het delen van inhoud en vrije uitwisseling van informatie. We waren nieuwsgierig naar taal en code als middelen om multipliciteit uit te drukken en wilden ontdekken hoe dialecten, pidgin en slang als culturele bruggen konden fungeren.

ʻChaque graph est comme un roman pour moi,ʼ elle a dit un jour.
ʻFaire les graphiques, cʼest des façons dʼapercevoir le monde. A travers la ʻnormeʼ, on cherche les patterns, et on vérifie ce qui dévie, on cherche les raisons. Parfois il y a des raisons qui sont tout à fait légitimes, parfois elles sont plus discutables... Pour que cela soit bien fait, il faudrait que tout le terrain soit couvert et que la juridiction soit explicite, mais la réalité est toujours un peu plus compliquée que la nomenclature !ʼ
