Each part begins with theoretical texts that address some of the concerns, followed by strategies that expose problematic power structures, creatively reveal how we lost control of our data and how we can deal again with our data.

The smart world. Created by policymakers, the advertising world, creative industries, and persuasive UX-designers that portray to us a world of shiny brand new technologies, apps that solve all our daily problems and smart cities collecting big data that will eventually solve all the problems of human kind. If we take a slightly more critical look at our smart world, though, our shiny gadgets become obsolete faster than ever, turning into toxic e-waste; our apps and smart cities have turned into an effective all-encompassing surveillance apparatus, and we have no idea who is collecting our data, who accesses it, and where it is stored. There may be issues that the smart world can solve, but at the same time, it raises new problems concerning data breaches, data privacy, data ownership and electronic waste. In this publication researchers and artists unfold some of these issues in three parts: Saving Data, Deleting Data and Resurfacing Data. Each part begins with theoretical texts that address some of the concerns, followed by strategies of artists and activists that expose problematic power structures, creatively reveal how we lost control of our data and offer strategies to deal with our data in this smart world.

Le monde intelligent; créé par les politiques, la publicité, les industries créatives et des développeurs UX persuasifs qui nous dessinent un monde régi par de nouvelles technologies brillantes, des applications capables de résoudre nos problèmes quotidiens et des villes intelligentes qui collectionnent nos données en promettant de résoudre tous les problèmes de l’humanité. Si, par contre, on jette un coup d’oeil critique sur ce monde intelligent, on s’aperçoit que nos gadgets brillants deviennent obsolètes plus vite que jamais, se transformant en déchets toxiques; nos applications et nos villes intelligentes quant à elles constituent un appareil effectif de surveillance tout-puissant. Nous n’avons aucune idée qui collectionne nos données, qui y a accès ni où elles sont sauvegardées. S’il existe des cas que le monde intelligent arrive à résoudre, il pose dans le même temps de nouveaux problèmes sur la violation des données, leur privacité et leur propriété ainsi que sur les déchets électroniques.

The Footfall Almanac 2019 collects observations, objects and other traces to instigate a discussion on surveillance techniques currently deployed in shopping malls, and during public major events in Brussels.
Wireless tracking of mobile phones has become a common method to monitor crowds without requiring explicit permission or active cooperation. Private companies as well as civil agencies use it to keep a close eye on the movements of city dwellers through public spaces, the former to forecast sales and the latter for crowd management purposes.
The Footfall Almanac 2019 observes this encounter of actors and predictions in their shared technologies and terminologies.

How to Cypher Sex: A Manual for Collective Digital Self-Defense Guides lays out strategies on how to write locally-oriented digital self-defense guides aimed at empowering LGBTQ* people, women, and sex workers. Constant supported the collective Cypher Sex in the making of this "how to" manual. The manual is intended to help the writing of localised guides with basic outlines, resources, links, suggested approaches and interview questions relevant to different international locations that advocate self-empowerment through online identity management and other digital self-defence strategies.
Cypher Sex is a queer feminist collective aimed at empowering LGBTQ* people, women, and sex workers in their use of online services and digital tools through workshops, guides, and personalized consultancies.

Interference has been a 3-day gathering in Amsterdam bringing together a broad range of theories and practices that shared a critical approach to society and technology. As part of the event, a reader was prepared bundling a number of these perspectives as they were contributed by the event’s participants.
The reader has been designed via the CSS print styles applied to the webpage of the event’s program, and a collection of workarounds were used to tweak the limitations of browser interpretation so that the drupal page structure would be printed out in book-like format. The resulting book has been risographed and velo-bound autonomously during the event, in an edition of 150, and distributed to the participants to spread the echoes of the discussions that took place during the event.

Interference était un rassemblement de 3 jours à Amsterdam réunissant un large éventail de théories et pratiques autour d’une approche critique de la société et de la technologie. Dans le cadre de l’événement, un lecteur a été préparé regroupant un certain nombre de points de vue émis par les participants de l’événement.
Le lecteur a été conçu via les styles d’impression CSS appliqués à la page Web du programme de l’événement, et une collection de détournements ont été utilisés pour modifier les limites de l’interprétation du navigateur afin que la structure drupale de la page soit imprimée sous forme de livre. Celui-ci a ensuite été risographié et velo-relié de façon autonome au cours de l’événement en une édition de 150 exemplaires, puis distribué aux participants pour diffuser les échos de leurs discussions lors du rassemblement.

Interference was een 3-daagse ontmoeting in Amsterdam tussen theorieën en praktijken met een kritische benadering van technologie en maatschappij. Als live-onderdeel van het evenement werd een reader gecreëerd met bijdragen van deelnemers.
De reader werd ontworpen met dezelfde CSS-stylesheets die ook voor de website van het evenement werden gebruikt. Via een aantal truuks omzeilden de grafisten de beperkingen van de browserlezing van de data, zodat de pagina-structuur van Drupal ook in boekformaat kan worden afgedrukt. Het finale boek werd nog tijdens het evenement gedrukt in een oplage van 150 exemplaren. We gebruikten hiervoor een risograaf en velobinding. De reader werd verspreid onder de deelnemers van Interference. De ideeën die tijdens discussies werden gedeeld, kregen zo ook een echo na het evenement.

This publication is an occasion to revisit three very different projects that have been important for the emergence of Varia, and for its individual members. These projects give insights into how and why we engage with collaborative practices. While we were gathering in different formations to initiate, develop, organise or present these projects, Varia was being conceived, first as an idea, then as a group and later as a physical space.
As artists, designers and researchers working with and around free/libre open source technology, the authorship of the tools and research that we develop is shared, not just amongst us at Varia but also with a wider international network. Multiple agents are involved at different moments, with varying intensity and for a range of different reasons. This results in intricate interrelationships of ownership which complicate documentation and long-term maintenance. Relational projects need flexible support structures that can handle and hold fragmentation and clustering.
For the projects in this publication, a chain of interrelated events provided an infrastructure for ongoing reflection, sharing and collaborative attention to such projects. Our path crossed at Varia in Rotterdam but also during 35c3 in Leipzig, at the Computer Grrrls exhibition in Paris, at Constant worksessions in Brussels and Antwerp, in conversation with XPUB tutors and students or at AMRO in Linz. While a lot of work was done by bringing these projects to different meeting points, we felt there was a need for concentrated rumination and active documentation. By collapsing maintenance work with publishing, we found a form that enabled this collective care work to happen and to spend the necessary concentrated time together. The making of this publication created a space to interconnect multiple ways of taking care. As a result, we hope that the projects have become more clearly articulated and are now ready to be released back into the networks to form new constellations.

Cette publication est l’occasion de revenir sur trois projets très différents qui ont été importants pour l’apparition de Varia, et pour ses membres individuels. Ces projets donnent un aperçu de la manière dont nous nous engageons dans des pratiques de collaboration et des raisons pour lesquelles nous le faisons. Alors que nous nous réunissions en différentes formations pour initier, développer, organiser ou présenter ces projets, Varia était conçu, d’abord comme une idée, puis comme un groupe et plus tard comme un espace physique.
En tant qu’artistes, designers et chercheurs travaillant avec et autour de la technologie libre, la paternité des outils et des recherches que nous développons est partagée, non seulement entre nous à Varia mais aussi avec un réseau international plus large. De multiples acteurs sont impliqués à de différents moments, avec une intensité variable et pour une série de raisons différentes. Il en résulte des relations complexes de propriété qui compliquent la documentation et la maintenance à long terme. Les projets relationnels ont besoin de structures de soutien flexibles qui peuvent gérer et maintenir la fragmentation et le regroupement.
Pour les projets présentés dans cette publication, une chaîne d’événements interdépendants a fourni une infrastructure pour une réflexion, un partage et une attention collaborative continus à ces projets. Nos chemins se sont croisés à Varia à Rotterdam, mais aussi pendant 35c3 à Leipzig, à l’exposition Computer Grrrls à Paris, aux sessions de travail Constant à Bruxelles et à Anvers, en conversation avec des professeurs et des étudiants XPUB ou à AMRO à Linz. Bien que beaucoup de travail ait été réalisé en amenant ces projets à différents points de rencontre, nous avons ressenti le besoin d’une rumination concentrée et d’une documentation active. En associant le travail de maintenance à la publication, nous avons trouvé une forme qui permettait à ce travail de soins collectifs de se produire et de passer du temps concentré ensemble. La réalisation de cette publication a créé un espace permettant d’interconnecter de multiples façons de prendre soin. En conséquence, nous espérons que les projets sont devenus plus clairement articulés et sont maintenant prêts à être remis en réseau pour former de nouvelles constellations.

Deze publicatie is een gelegenheid om drie zeer verschillende projecten die belangrijk zijn geweest voor de opkomst van Varia, en voor de individuele leden, opnieuw te bekijken. Deze projecten geven inzicht in het hoe en waarom van onze samenwerking. Terwijl we in verschillende formaties bijeenkwamen om deze projecten te initiëren, te ontwikkelen, te organiseren of te presenteren, werd Varia bedacht, eerst als een idee, daarna als een groep en later als een fysieke ruimte.
Als kunstenaars, ontwerpers en onderzoekers die werken met en rond free/libre open source technologie, wordt het auteurschap van de tools en het onderzoek dat we ontwikkelen gedeeld, niet alleen onder ons bij Varia maar ook met een breder internationaal netwerk. Meerdere agenten zijn op verschillende momenten betrokken, met wisselende intensiteit en om verschillende redenen. Dit resulteert in complexe eigendomsverhoudingen die de documentatie en het onderhoud op lange termijn bemoeilijken. Relationele projecten hebben flexibele ondersteuningsstructuren nodig die versnippering en clustering kunnen opvangen en in stand houden.
Voor de projecten in deze publicatie zorgde een reeks onderling samenhangende evenementen voor een infrastructuur die op lange termijn reflectie toeliet, uitwisseling en collectieve aandacht. Onze wegen kruisten bij Varia in Rotterdam, maar ook tijdens 35c3 in Leipzig, op de Computer Grrrls tentoonstelling in Parijs, tijdens Constant worksessions in Brussel en Antwerpen, in gesprek met XPUB docenten en studenten of bij AMRO in Linz. Veel werk werd verzet door deze projecten naar verschillende ontmoetingsplaatsen te brengen. Tegelijk vonden we dat er nood was aan geconcentreerde herwerking en actieve documentatie. In de combinatie van onderhoudswerk en publicatie vonden we een vorm die dit collectieve zorgwerk mogelijk maakte en brachten we de nodige geconcentreerde tijd samen door. Met deze publicatie is er een ruimte ontstaan om meerdere zorgwerkzaamheden met elkaar te verbinden. We hopen dat de projecten nu duidelijker gearticuleerd zijn en klaar om weer te reizen door de netwerken en nieuwe opstellingen te vormen.

The Pirate Book offers a broad view on media piracy as well as a variety of comparative perspectives on recent issues and historical facts regarding piracy. It contains a compilation of texts on grassroots situations whose stories describe strategies developed to share, distribute and experience cultural content outside of the confines of local economies, politics or laws.

These stories recount the experiences of individuals from India, Cuba, Brazil, Mexico, Mali and China. The book is structured in four parts and begins with a collection of stories on piracy dating back to the invention of the printing press and expanding to broader issues (historical and modern antipiracy technologies, geographically specific issues, as well as the rules of the Warez scene, its charters, structure and visual culture…).

The riddle of the real city is composed as a cloud essay that serves to enrich the reader’s theoretical understanding of urban interventions. It is designed by Open Source Publishing using their tool html2print and is available as a printed book as well as an epub.
Does our knowledge about city and urban planning have solid ground? Can historical research promote creative thinking? How can we theorise about urban design and architecture in our age of the media? These questions have guided the creation of this multi-layered, richly documented and illustrated triptych, in which the Dutch architectural theorist Wim Nijenhuis pursues a creative goal: to stimulate new ways of thinking in architectural culture.

Het bestaat uit verhalen rond specifieke gevallen, die zich in verleden en heden afspelen, richting verbeelding en speculatie. Het ‘camera-ready copy’ van dit boek werd gemaakt met een pen plotter: dit betekende dat we ook de workflow moesten herdenken, inclusief het gebruik van een speciaal lettertype-stack op basis van gravure-gereedschappen, zodat we lijngebaseerde letterytypes konden gebruiken.
