A Traversal Network of Feminist Servers (ATNOFS) was a project initiated by Varia, Hypha, Lurk, esc medien kunst lab, Feminist Hack Meetings  and Constant. It took place throughout the year 2022 in six diferent European locations, across various internet cables and with a small local server named rosa.

ATNOFS was a collaborative project formed around intersectional, feminist, ecological servers whose communities travelled between each other to share and extend their knowledges through live gatherings. ATNOFS argued that such plaforms and tools are necessary to navigate our communications and cultural growth beyond the current media oligopolies, and democratise cultural and political expression outside obscure, bureaucratic algorithms and advertising monetisation.

After a litle more than a year of many virtual and physical meetings filled with conversations, experimentations, collective writing, chit-chat and shared meals, the project was wrapped up in the form of this publication.

Il s'est déroulé tout au long de l'année 2022 dans six lieux européens différents, à travers divers câbles Internet et avec un petit serveur local nommé rosa.

ATNOFS était un projet collaboratif autour de serveurs intersectionnels, féministes et écologiques dont les communautés voyageaient entre elles pour partager et étendre leurs connaissances par le biais de rassemblements en direct. ATNOFS soutenait que de telles plateformes et de tels outils sont nécessaires pour naviguer dans nos communications et notre croissance culturelle au-delà des oligopoles médiatiques actuels, et pour démocratiser l'expression culturelle et politique en dehors de l'obscurité bureaucratique et de la monétisation publicitaire.

Après un peu plus d'un an de réunions virtuelles et physiques remplies de conversations, d'expérimentations, d'écriture collective, de bavardages et de repas partagés, le projet s'est achève sous la forme de cette publication.

A Traversal Network of Feminist Servers (ATNOFS) was een project die werdt geïnitieerd door Varia, Hypha, Lurk, esc medien kunst lab, Feminist Hack Meetings en Constant. Het vond plaats gedurende het jaar 2022 op zes verschillende Europese locaties, via verschillende internetkabels en met een kleine lokale server genaamd rosa.

ATNOFS was een samenwerkingsproject rond intersectionele, feministische, ecologische servers waarvan de gemeenschappen tussen elkaar reisden om hun kennis te delen en uit te breiden door middel van live bijeenkomsten. ATNOFS stelde dat dergelijke vormen en gereedschappen nodig zijn om onze communicatie en culturele groei voorbij de huidige mediaoligopolies te navigeren en culturele en politieke expressie te democratiseren buiten de obscure bureaucratische algoritmen en het reclamegeld.

Na iets meer dan een jaar van vele virtuele en fysieke ontmoetingen vol gesprekken, experimenten, collectief schrijven, kletsen en gezamenlijke maaltijden, werd het project afgerond in de vorm van deze publicatie.

By Data We Mean is an online publication following the meetingdays Verbindingen/Jonctions 12. A creation by Donatella Portoghese, Nicolas Malevé, Stephanie Villayphiou, Alex Leray and Gijs de Heij.This publication collects the different texts that were produced for the lectures and presentation of V/J12. It also constitutes a platform for experiments. What becomes possible when texts are released under a free license? What happens when two texts apparently very different from each other, but with many points of contact at a second reading, are brought together, mixed, smashed, and suddenly acquire a completely different form and meaning? Isn’t every text ambiguous and open to different interpretations? And how can the grey literature surrounding textual production influence the process of reading and decoding it?

Réalisée par Donatella Portoghese, Nicolas Malevé, Stephanie Villayphiou, Alex Leray et Gijs de Heij.Cette publication rassemble les différents textes qui ont été produits pour les conférences et les présentations de V/J12. Elle est aussi une plateforme pour de nouvelles expériences. Quelles possibilités adviennent lorsque des textes sont publiés sous une licence libre ? Que se passe-t-il lorsque deux textes apparemment très différents l’un de l’autre, mais qui révèlent de nombreux points de contact à une deuxième lecture, sont soudain mis en relation, mixés, pétris l’un dans l’autre et acquièrent une nouvelle forme et un sens nouveau ? Het is ook een experiment met het potentieel van teksten die onder een vrije licentie worden gepubliceerd. Wat gebeurt er wanneer twee teksten, die op het eerste gezicht erg verschillend zijn, maar tijdens een tweede lezing een reeks gemeenschappelijke elementen vertonen, worden samengebracht en gemixed, en een heel verschillende vorm en betekenis krijgen? In 2023 Constant started a new series of yearly publications connected to the new artistic programme covering the programme 2023-2027.

This publication loosely narrates the experiences and artistic practices we gathered in 2023 around the theme of Techno-disobedience.

We looked at ways of making a publication using experimental tools as part of a research into a system for documenting Constant’s activities. We asked graphic designer Manetta Berends to join us through an artistic commission to think with us about this potential system based on tools that are part of Constant’s ongoing work and reflections on promiscuous publishing.

The publication is the result of our step into octomode, a system that allowed us to have a publication balancing collective workflows and experimental additions, but with a much more predictable timeline. In the case of this publication, we developed a custom version that allows us to output different PDFs with color separation in view of our riso-printing at Chez Rosi in Brussels. To achieve the separation of colors, we made use of [Imagemagick](https://imagemagick.org/Usage/compose/) and a bunch of hacks in our css styles to make sure to generate both a riso simulation of the two color printing technique for the web version and the correct files to send to the risograph printer.

The writing of the publication was done on several computers connected to the same etherpad, and then styled through templates and stylesheets, and output as html, pdf, audio recordings, crocheted pieces, balaclavas, worms, spirals, amazing collective food moments and many constructed doodles over drinks. We loosely divided the work of writing, editing, styling between the people around the table: the Constant team, joined by Manetta Berends and Alix Turcq.

En 2023, Constant a entamé une nouvelle série de publications annuelles, corollaire du nouveau programme artistique couvrant les cinq prochaines années.

Cette publication raconte librement les expériences et les pratiques artistiques que nous avons rassemblées en 2023 autour du thème de la techno-désobéissance.

Nous avons examiné les moyens de réaliser une publication avec des outils expérimentaux dans le cadre d’une recherche d’un système de documentation des activités de Constant. Nous avons demandé à la graphiste Manetta Berends de se joindre à nous par le biais d’une commande artistique afin de réfléchir à ce potentiel système basé sur des outils faisant partie du travail et des réflexions en cours autour de la publication chez Constant.

Cette publication est le résultat de notre choix d’utiliser octomode, un système qui nous a permis d’avoir une publication en équilibrant les flux de travail collectifs et les ajouts expérimentaux, mais avec un calendrier beaucoup plus prévisible. Dans le cas de cette publication, nous avons développé une version personnalisée qui nous permet de produire différents PDF avec une séparation des couleurs en vue de notre impression riso chez Chez Rosi à Bruxelles. Pour réaliser la séparation des couleurs, nous avons utilisé le logiciel [Imagemagick](https://imagemagick.org/Usage/compose/) et un tas de bidouillages dans nos styles css pour s’assurer de générer à la fois une simulation riso de la technique d’impression en deux couleurs pour la version web et les fichiers corrects à envoyer à l’imprimeur pour l’impression risographe.

L’écriture de la publication a été réalisée sur plusieurs ordinateurs connectés au même etherpad, puis stylisée à l’aide de modèles et de feuilles de style, et produite en html, pdf, enregistrements audio, pièces crochetées, cagoules, vers, spirales, incroyables moments de cuisine collective et de nombreux gribouillis construits autour d’un verre. In 2023 begon Constant met een nieuwe reeks jaarlijkse publicaties, een uitvloeisel van het nieuwe artistieke programma voor de komende vijf jaar.

Deze publicatie vertelt losjes de ervaringen en artistieke praktijken die we in 2023 verzamelden rond het thema Techno-disobedience.

We besloten te kijken naar manieren om een publicatie te maken met behulp van enkele van de experimentele instrumenten die zijn voortgekomen uit het gezamenlijke werk aan een systeem voor het documenteren van de jaarlijkse activiteiten van Constant. We besloten grafisch ontwerper Manetta Berends te vragen om samen met ons een artistieke opdracht uit te voeren en met ons na te denken over dit mogelijke nieuwe systeem op basis van tools die deel uitmaken van het lopende werk en de reflecties rond het lopende en hybride werk rond publicatie bij Constant.

Deze publicatie is het resultaat van onze keuze om octomode te gebruiken, een systeem waarvan we overtuigd zijn dat het ons in staat zal stellen om voor dit jaar een publicatie te hebben die een balans biedt tussen collectieve workflows en experimentele toevoegingen, maar met een veel voorspelbaarder schema. In het geval van deze publicatie hebben we een aangepaste versie ontwikkeld waarmee we verschillende in kleur gescheiden PDF’s kunnen produceren voor onze risodruk bij Chez Rosi in Brussel. As a hommage to the life and demise of authors whose bodies merged with earth in 1941, each version takes you through four seasons that are composed of thematically selected sentences from their liberated texts. The selection of the texts used for this publication is very much influenced by the availability of works online. The Death of the Authors is a series of generative narratives based on work by authors in the public domain. Each year in January, when Constant celebrates Public Domain Day in collaboration with Cinema Nova, CRIDS and The Royal Library of Belgium, we present a new derivative work, as a way to inspire you to make public works electronically available and rediscover them. Every year on New Year’s Day, due to the expiration of copyright protection terms on works produced by authors who died seven decades earlier, thousands of works enter the public domain - that is, their content is no longer owned or controlled by anyone, but it rather becomes a common treasure, available for anyone to freely use for any purpose.

The Death of the Authors is een reeks generatieve creaties op basis van werk van auteurs in het publieke domein. Elk jaar opnieuw viert Constant Publiek Domein Dag in samenwerking met Cinema Nova, CRIDS en De Koninklijke Bibliotheek van België. Op die dag presenteren we telkens een nieuw afgeleid werk, als een manier om je te inspireren je werken digitaal toegankelijk te maken en werken van anderen te herontdekken. Elke nieuwjaarsdag verwelkomen we de enorme rijkdom aan kennis, informatie en schoonheid die vrij toegankelijk wordt voor de mensheid. Als een gevolg van het auteursrecht dat afloopt 70 jaar na de dood van de auteur, komen elk jaar duizenden werken vrij in het publieke domein. Dat betekent dat hun inhoud niet langer het bezit is van of gecontroleerd wordt door iemand. De werken worden gemeenschappelijke schatten, die door eenieder vrij kunnen worden gebruikt voor eender welk doel.

DiVersions took place in the Royal Museum of Art and History in Brussels from 4 to 11 December 2016 and was inspired by the way versions are inscribed in daily software-practice. With 35 participants we explored how parallel to their conventional narrative of collaboration and consensus, we could produce divergent histories through supporting difference.

The worksession was followed by a broader project which consisted in an exhibition in De Pianofabriek and this publication in 2019. A second version of this publication and an online exhibition were launched in June 2020.

DiVersions a eu lieu du 4 décembre au 11 décembre 2016 au Musée Royal d’Art et Histoire à Bruxelles et s’inspirait de la façon dont les versions font partie de la pratique quotidienne des logiciels. Avec une groupe de 35 participant(e)s, nous avons exploré comment celles-ci peuvent rendre possible, au-delà des pratiques existantes de collaboration et consensus, des formes divergentes de récits historiques en offrant de l’espace à la différence.

Diversies vond plaats van 4 tot 11 december 2016 in het Koninklijk Museum voor Kunst en Geschiedenis in Brussel en vertrok vanuit de manier waarop versies deel uitmaken van de dagelijkse software-praktijk. Met 35 deelnemers onderzochten we hoe we naast het gebruikelijke verhaal over samenwerking en consensus, ook divergerende vormen van geschiedschrijving mogelijk kunnen maken door plaats te bieden aan verschil.

De werksessie werd gevolgd door een breder project dat bestond uit een tentoonstelling in De Pianofabriek en deze publicatie in 2019. Een tweede versie van deze publicatie en een online tentoonstelling werden gelanceerd in juni 2020.

DiVersions engaged with the potential of on-line cultural heritage for welcoming various forms of collaboration, allowing conflicts to show up, and make space for other narratives. In dialogue with cultural institutions and their collections, the project experimented with digitized and digital heritage to open up databases, metadata, catalogs and digital infrastructures for other imaginations.

This booklet is an annex of the publication Iterations.

The paper copy can be purchased together with the main publication Iterations.

This publication aims to create openings and inspire new concepts for work yet to be developed. As a vessel it is filled with hybrid content that can be unpacked and remixed. Inside this book, contributions of some participants from the past and Iterators from the future coincide in a joint effort to transport ideas to persons and contexts that are yet unknown to us. As such this  publication could be read as an Iteration in itself.

The contributions are related to approaches, attitudes, positions that emerged from the Iterations project. Manetta Berends & Jara Rocha created a set of descriptions of common threads that were called ‘handles’, and invited each contributor to respond to one of them. During the ‘editorial sprint’ to process the material, scores were produced that allowed for a transversal reading of the contributions. This practice was named ‘x-dexing’.

Cette publication vise à créer des ouvertures et à inspirer de nouveaux concepts pour des projets encore à développer. Comme un vaisseau, elle est remplie d'un contenu hybride qui peut être déballé et remixé. À l'intérieur de ce livre, les contributions de certains participant.e.s du passé et des itérateur.trice.s du futur coïncident dans un effort commun pour transporter des idées vers des personnes et des contextes qui nous sont encore inconnus. En tant que telle, cette publication pourrait être lue comme une itération en soi.

Les contributions sont liées à des approches, des attitudes, des positions qui ont émergé du projet Itérations. Manetta Berends et Jara Rocha ont créé une série de descriptions de fils conducteurs, appelées "poignées", et ont invité chaque contributeur.trice à répondre à l'une d'entre elles. This first episode in the series Networks Of One’s Own includes a software release, manuals, documentation and essays of Etherbox, a constellation of practices and tools developed in and around Constant. Etherbox responds to practical issues when collaborating in physical spaces with digital tools. In parallel, it became a platform to reflect on network technologies, on how to document artistic processes and on processes of collaboration.

On a practical level, Etherbox was a response to several frustrations: the fragility of online resources, the fact that the labour necessary to maintain resources online after a collective session was often overlooked or simply assumed to continue indefinitely, the limitations of Internet bandwidth when working with many people using etherpad-lite. The goal of the project was thus to present an infrastructure that is both visible and situated. Since it’s early beginnings in 2013, many groups have enjoyed the pleasure of writing and documenting together, questioning infrastructure set-ups or simply sharing files effortlessly. Through these multiple experiences, Etherbox has grown up to facilitate discussions and collaborative practices independent from Constant collaborators. Now it is ready to transmutate into other networked imaginations.

Networks Of One’s Own is a para-nodal1 periodic publication that is itself collectively written in a network. Each of the episodes is thought of as the ‘release’ of a specific software stack, contextualised in its specific practice. The series aims to document a set of tools, experiences, ways of working that are diverse in terms of their temporality, granularity and persistence.

Etherbox répond à des problématiques pratiques dans le cadre d’une collaboration dans les espaces physiques avec des outils numériques. En parallèle, il est devenu une plateforme de réflexion sur les technologies de réseau, sur la manière de documenter les processus artistiques et sur les processus de collaboration.

D’un point de vue pratique, Etherbox offre une réponse à plusieurs frustrations : la fragilité des ressources en ligne, le fait que le travail nécessaire pour maintenir les ressources en ligne après une session collective était souvent négligé ou simplement supposé se poursuivre à l’infini, les limites de la bande passante Internet lorsque l’on travaille avec plusieurs personnes utilisant etherpad-lite. L’objectif du projet était donc de présenter une infrastructure à la fois visible, adaptable et située. Depuis ses débuts en 2013, de nombreux groupes ont eu le plaisir d’écrire et de documenter ensemble, de remettre en question les configurations d’infrastructure ou simplement de partager des fichiers sans effort. Grâce à ces multiples expériences, Etherbox s’est développé comme outil pour faciliter les discussions et les pratiques collaboratives de manière indépendante des collaborateurs de Constant. Il est maintenant prêt à se transmuter en d’autres imaginations en réseau.

Networks Of One’s Own est une publication périodique para-nodale, écrite collectivement en réseau. Chaque épisode est considéré comme la « publication » d’un module de logiciel, contextualisée dans sa pratique spécifique. La série vise à documenter un ensemble d’outils, d’expériences, de modes de travail divers en termes de temporalité, granularité et persistance.

Het biedt een antwoord op praktische vragen voor documentatie en het delen van bestanden, wanneer een groep mensen samenwerkt in een ruimte met digitaal materiaal. Daarnaast werd het ook een platform om na te denken over genetwerkte technologieën, het documenteren van artistieke processen en processen van samenwerken.

Heel concreet biedt Etherbox antwoord op een aantal frustraties: de kwetsbaarheid van online bronmateriaal, de gespeletenheid om digitaal materiaal te delen via servers in de VS, terwijl je elkaar koffie schenkt in dezelfde ruimte; het feit dat werkuren die nodig zijn om documentatie van collectieve sessies online te onderhouden vaak over het hoofd worden gezien, of dat er eenvoudigweg vanuit gegaan wordt dat archivering tot in het oneindige gebeurt, de beperkingen van een Internetverbinding wanneer je met veel mensen tegelijk op etherpad-lite werkt. Het doel van dit project was dus het ontwikkelen van een infrastructuur die tegelijk zichtbaar, manipuleerbaar en gesitueerd is. Sinds de eerste versies in 2013 vond een heel aantal groepen plezier in het samen schrijven en documenteren, het zoeken naar verschillende infrastructurele set-ups, of eenvoudigweg het delen van bestanden. Dankzij deze meervoudige ervaringen groeide Etherbox tot een gereedschap dat discussies en collectieve praktijken faciliteert, onafhankelijk van Constantleden. Nu is het klaar om te transformeren in andere genetwerkte verbeeldingen.

Networks Of One’s Own is een periodieke paranodale publicatie die collectief geschreven wordt in een netwerk. Elke episode wordt gezien als de ’release’ van een softwarestack, die gecontextualiseerd wordt in zijn specifieke praktijk. De serie is gericht op het documenteren van een set van instrumenten, ervaringen, manieren van werken die divers zijn in termen van hun temporaliteit, granulariteit en persistentie.

With the comic format we experimented ways of formulating metaphors and narratives that would help make the technical explanation of splinter more accessible.
